The Royal Ranger of the Year program started in 1978.  The first national ranger of the year was one of fourteen boys interviewed at the 1978 National Camporama at Farragut State Park in Idaho.  Tony Long of the South Texas District was the first national Ranger of the Year, and was awarded a $100.00 bill, and one year membership on the National Council.

The concept of  Royal Ranger of the Year was to select the most representative boys, choosing those who were the most well rounded, mentally, physically, spiritually and socially.  Camp craft skills were a major part of the test, as was anything related to Royal Rangers.  Boys would also be tested with a written test, skills test, oral review board, and uniform inspection.  In the end, the boy with the highest score was named the Ranger of the Year for that year, and allowed to advance to the next level, all the way to the National Ranger of the Year testing.

The boy who was selected as National Ranger of the Year was awarded a $1000.00 scholarship, jointly funded by the national Royal Rangers Department and the National Education Department.  The first runner up was awarded a $500.00 scholarship.

The boys listed below were either participants (listed as region roty), first runner up, or national roty for Trailrangers from the Gulf Region.

In 2005, the newly revised Ranger of the Year was released as an evaluation, not a competition.  The evaluation is merit based, allowing boys to choose from a list of merits to test on for the skills and written test.  They are also tested on Bible merits, the handbook, and uniform inspection. This format for ROTY counts from school year to school year. All eight regions continue to have only one National ROTY, but can have as many regional roty's as can qualify

  • Tommy Regal, So. Missouri District, 2005 Gulf Region National Ranger of the Year for the 2003/04 school year
  • Jonathan Woods, Arkansas District, 2006 Gulf Region National Ranger of the Year for the 2004/05 school year

At the 2008 National Royal Rangers Council, it was announced that the National Royal Rangers office would suspend the Ranger of the Year program for a period of about 5 years.  This was to allow the National Office to rework the program and to make it easier to understand.  Ranger of the Year is not gone, it will be back!

In 1990, the Gulf Region Staff voted to create Royal Ranger of the Year bolo tie.  It was designed by Fred Deaver, who sculpted the bolo and the tips from sculpting wax to be cast in pewter.  There were two colors, red and blue, the Trailblazers recieved the red bolo, and the Trailrangers recieved the blue bolo.  There were two different designs as well.  One read "Finalist" and the other read "Winner".  The first of these were presented in 1992 to the 10 boys who came to Gulf Region ROTY competition, and the last were presented in 2002.  Although there was a great desire to aquire one of these bolos, no staff or other leaders were ever presented with one of these bolos, only the boys who were running for regional Ranger of the year were given these bolos.
